My dude RB Kidd hit me up letting me know he wanted to be in his upcoming video. Of course I wasn’t going to pass up on the opportunity. When I met up with him at the shoot I had no idea that I would get a whole skit. It was an honor for me to be in my dude video. The song is dope and he also rocked the District 81 “Haters Keep Hatin” tee in numerous shots of the video. So shout out to RB Kidd. See you next video my dude lol…. Press Play!

First day back at school and my dude Adam shocks me and the world by waking up in some original Clark Wallabees. The cloth shits! Not worried about the masses and the stares, he just simply said “Their comfortable.” Maybe we all can learn from Adam and just do what we feel is “Comfortable.”

For those haven’t heard by now, The Roots made history by becoming the first hip-hop band to be made part of a major night show. One of the best live bands ever retired from touring to play in between interviews for a mainstream late night show?? Needless to say there were a lot of strong feelings, between people happy the band would continue to get shine and possibly open doors for the future, and those who felt they were selling out to the mainstream of the masses. People began to call them old and tiring, and they lost a lot of respect in many people’s eyes. NBC was originally very skeptical about bringing a branded “hip-hop” group onto their network for regular appearances.

Even members of the band had doubts if they were doing the right thing. Regardless, nightly TV exposure has helped the hip-hop group raise their profile. “In the beginning, some bloggers were making it look like I took my Park Place and my Boardwalk and Penn Avenue and traded it all in for one house on Oriental Avenue,” says ?uestlove. “They actually thought that we were household superstars. TMZ is never chasing me or wondering what girlfriend I’m dating this week. To the majority of the world they think every record we put out is our second record. Not us being on our 11th. I started to notice at shows that we’d start playing bigger halls based on us getting more exposure on the show. Then I was like, ‘Oh shit. This can actually benefit us.’ ”

Download your piece of history here.
These are my thoughts, but shouts to Nah Right. for the EP download.

Rita J is a fresh young talent from Chicago, Illinois. She lists numerous influences from Whitney Houston to Audioslave to Nas to Jamiroquai. Her unique style reflects the wide variety of music she allows to influence her. Her style is raw, intelligent raps over organic, soulful, funky beats that make me think of the 1970’s. Check her single below, “No Regrets” off of her album entitled “Artist Workshop.”

She’s originally from Atlanta and she’s still heavy in the game down there. She’s traveled all over the place, and her music reflects that because you can never really box her into any of the regional categories that many emcees fall into. She is also featured in an upcoming film entitled “Pathways” directed by Eljay Williams that comes out in summer 2010. But don’t mistake the adjectives “young” and “fresh” for “inexperienced.” She’s been independently putting out great music for over ten years now, and whether she ever makes it big nor not has been making moves for a while. If you take the time to listen, you won’t be dissapointed.

Check out more of her stuff and other legit artists at All-Natural Hip-Hop.

His project, “Two! For The Show” shows up in my library as coming out in the year 2064. Not sure if this is Windows Vista being quirky again or an intentional message, but either way it fits what I hear. This young Illinois Producer and Emcee has a production style and flow that really does seem like it’s from a different era. He might snatch one line from a familiar rap song and make it into a part of a catchy chorus for a song that is totally different from the original song sampled, or he might just drop lyrics over a well-known beat while showing off a polished flow and lyrical prowess that you can’t ignore.

Jarrett- What’s your expectations for “New Slang”?
Boognights- I think it will do really well when it drops. A lot of dope up and coming artists are on it and I’m grateful to be featured as well. So it will definitely do well. There are a lot of big supporters on the net.

Jarrett- The New Year is fast approaching, what’s your resolution?
Boognights- A resolution? I would say to keep growning as a man and a artist. Get my music out there for more ears to hear.

Jarrett- What inspires your creativity? How do you keep the music fresh and never redundant?
Boognights- I really don’t know. I let the beat talk to me and tell me what to do and I just write. It’s funny but it’s true. I just write from the heart. I think that’s where the best music comes from. I’m just true to myself.

Jarrett- What got you into rapping?
Boognights- A old friend of mine named Ambush really showed me the essense of rhyming. That’s how I feel in love with it. He was a dope artist. It just stuck with me since.

Jarrett- Who are some of the people who inspired you and made you what you are today?
Boognights- There are so many people. As far as in my life it would be my mom, father, sister, brother, and Ambush. Nas, Biggie, Pac, Jay-Z, the whole Wu-Tang. Just to name a few.

Jarrett- How did you get the name “Boognights”?
Boognights- It’s funny how I came up with that name. You remember the movie “Boogie Nights”? Well when I was younger in one of my verses I mentioned the character Dirk Diggler. Ever since then I kept making references about the movie. Then I would say boogie all the time. I started calling my self boogie nights and then I finally shortened it and kept it as BOOGNIGHTS. It throws people off now. I think they don’t know what to expect from my music lol. But that’s cool though.

Jarrett- What excludes you from other rappers and makes you unique?
Boognights- Well first I would say my name lol. I wouldn’t really say that I’m different. I just think that I actually found myself as a person and a artist and I’m comfortable with me. That allows me to be myself in my art. A lot of people can’t say that now a days.

Jarrett- If you could work with any rapper who would it be and why?
Boognights- I would love to work with Nas. Of course there are many, many other artists on there but he’s the first that popped in my head. He’s my favorite emcee and growing up I always loved his flow and tried to mimic him lol. I just love his music and I think he would be great to work with.

Jarrett- Whats your favorite track from your upcoming mixtape “New Slang”?
Boognights- I actually haven’t heard the other songs yet from the mixtape.

    Jarrett- Any shout outs?
Boognights- My whole family and friends. Jumpman crew. A.M.E. And anybody who believes in me and my music.

Jarrett- Anything else you wanna say?
Boognights- Make sure you go and download my free mixtape called The ARTiste. Go to myspace.com/BOOGNIGHTS andTwitter.com/BOOGNIGHTS. Look out for more to come. Much luv and peace.

We would like to say thanks again to Boognights on taking his time out and doing this interview. Much love man and keep doing what your doing cant wait for the mixtape

Nowadays, people either love or hate the stuff that Lil Wayne is putting out, and I can’t even lie, most of it I hate. I was listening to Carter II today while doing homework. I hadn’t heard “Shooter” in forever, which is damn near a classic in my opinion. Robin Thicke kills the chorus, the beat really reminds me of an old western, and Wayne spits some poignant, charged lyrics that really say something and actually make you think. He calls out radio stations for playing only certain rap from certain regions and proclaims that “if we too simple, then y’all don’t get the basics.”

Then I listened to Fly In, possibly the most dramatic Wayne track ever and one of the best. He came with fire in this track too, spitting crazy metaphors over a instrumental straight from a horror story. The list goes on. Oh Naw, Music Take Me Away, Fly Out, and others are all great tracks that showcase a guy who at one point I really thought would be one of the best lyricists in the game for years to come. I sat back and remembered how DOPE that cd really was, no matter what he did after. He had the confidence, unique style, and metaphors to do something special. Listen to “Sportscenter” below, for example.

He even spit a little bit of political rap with the song “Georgia Bush” after Hurrican Katrina hit his hometown New Orleans, expressing anger over what he interpreted to be ignorance and crime on part of the government, FEMA, and, namely George Bush.

Then I listened to Drought 3. Wayne murdered a slew of beats with rapid-fire, tongue-in-cheek flow in what I believe is one of the best mixtapes I have heard in the past couple years. He was never known for spitting deep stuff, but on tapes like this he was the unrivaled punch line master. I listen to his newest stuff, where he tries to be a rock star? Or T-Wayne? And I can’t help but wonder why he changed.

It was reported by CNN on December 4th that the Vatican selected “Changes” by the late Tupac Shakur for one of the 12 songs on their newly created official myspace page. I feel like this is one of the best things to happen in the world of hip-hop in a while. Think about it. The center of one of the largest sects of religon in the world chose to recognize a song from the hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur among songs from around the world to display to the world. The fact that the Vatican can look past the obscenities in the song and hear the message so eloquently portrayed by Shakur is liberating in a sense.

Think about it. Do you think the Vatican cares about commercial appeal, or appealing to the black community? No. They decided to accept the song as a part of what they show to the masses because of the message it portrays. This song is placed next to songs from albums such as “Music From The Vatican Alma Mater”,” and songs that are hundreds of years old.

The Vatican wrote on its myspace page that “the genres are very different from each other, but all these artists share the aim to reach the heart of good minded people.” I’m just happy that the heart of a good minded person can transcend cultural differences and be recognized by many. Here’s to all the good-minded people out there, wherever you are.

There’s a lot more to the West Coast besides “One Blood” and “Tell Me When To Go.” I call it beach rap. The Hieroglyphics, People Under The Stairs, and the Mighty Underdogs are three groups that bring you a little something different than what you’ve grown to expect out of the “Golden State.”

The Hieroglyphics are from Oakland CA and they were founded by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien in the early 1990s. They have a lot of jazzy, tropical-sounding samples that really make you feel like you’re relaxing on vacation.

People Under The Stairs is a somewhat newer group from Los Angeles that first came out in 1998. They have a variety of funk influences, and songs that make you think of lazy summers chilling with fam and friends.

The Mighty Underdogs are a newer group that came out in the past 5 years or so. They have a variety of tracks; some that make you feel like you’re out partying with friends, some that even sound like you’re in a crazy science fiction story. They have Gift of Gab, the guy who made “Alphabet Aerobics” as their lyricist.

These are a few of my favorite groups out of the West Coast scene right now, but there’s a bunch more to listen to. Great music to mellow out to after a stressful day or week, or just whenever you want a break from the norm. Check em out.

“You would rather be far away, just to have it go all your way. But can you afford the cost you pay? You’re living in a Dangerous Wonderland.”

This is the chorus to B.o.B.’s track entitled “Dangerous Wonderland.” This track, off of the Atlanta native’s “B.o.B. Vs. Bobby Ray,” is much more than your typical mixtape, or even album cut. B.o.B. fearlessly explores tough topics in the “Dangerous Wonderland” of the United States. In the first verse discussing “the land of make-believe,” in reference to America, he challenges the views of mainstream America in discriminating against people of different nationalities. He also points out the tendency of us as Americans to only consider important things that are close to us or actually have an effect on us.

The second verse is more metaphorical, lamenting the difficulties of a child who struggled in school and felt rejected by his family. If you actually listen and think about it, you realize that B.o.B. shared his own story of struggle with us in this second verse. “And he opened his eyes and realized that he had tapped into the galactic. Off he blasted….”
