December 30th, 2009Just My Thoughts, MusicKansas Pastor Fred Phleps of the Westboro Baptist Church is upset with Lady Gaga and apparently he and his congregation plans to protest outside of her up coming show. According to Pastor Phleps Press Release God is saying that “GOD HATES LADY GAGA!!!” He has put out a press release that promotes and explains why he and his congregation will be protesting outside of Lady GaGa’s concert at the Fox Theatre on Jan. 7 in St. Louis.
WOW! I’m understanding where the church could be coming from. However their way of doing it is extremely unGodly! For no reason should any “Child of God” or not of God try and question another persons relationship in Christ! If Gaga worships the devil, or hell trees for that matter that’s her business. I dont understand why she is the person of focus? There are many other artist that you could also put in this category.

According to the National Enquirer, Whitney’s recent behavior has friends concern. “Everyone is worried about her,” a source said. “Whitney seems to go from being a nervous wreck to being completely out of it in a short period of time — just like she did when she was freebasing and using crack cocaine. “She is still drinking and with Whitney, alcohol and drugs have always gone hand-in-hand. She’s worked so hard to get back on top. It would be tragic for it to go up in smoke because she can’t stay clean. “You can’t help worrying that she’s slipped back into some of her bad habits,” added the source. -

According to several reports Diddy is handing out thousands of subway passes and vouchers redeemable for taxi rides in the New York and in Vegas as part of his “Safe Rides” program, which he launched last year. He says, “New York stands as the world’s icon for a New Year’s Eve celebration and Las Vegas is the biggest party destination in the country. “By bringing this program to both of these great cities we will continue to show the rest of the country that a sophisticated holiday celebration doesn’t end when the ball drops, but when everyone gets home safely.” -

For those haven’t heard by now, The Roots made history by becoming the first hip-hop band to be made part of a major night show. One of the best live bands ever retired from touring to play in between interviews for a mainstream late night show?? Needless to say there were a lot of strong feelings, between people happy the band would continue to get shine and possibly open doors for the future, and those who felt they were selling out to the mainstream of the masses. People began to call them old and tiring, and they lost a lot of respect in many people’s eyes. NBC was originally very skeptical about bringing a branded “hip-hop” group onto their network for regular appearances.Even members of the band had doubts if they were doing the right thing. Regardless, nightly TV exposure has helped the hip-hop group raise their profile. “In the beginning, some bloggers were making it look like I took my Park Place and my Boardwalk and Penn Avenue and traded it all in for one house on Oriental Avenue,” says ?uestlove. “They actually thought that we were household superstars. TMZ is never chasing me or wondering what girlfriend I’m dating this week. To the majority of the world they think every record we put out is our second record. Not us being on our 11th. I started to notice at shows that we’d start playing bigger halls based on us getting more exposure on the show. Then I was like, ‘Oh shit. This can actually benefit us.’ ”

Rita J is a fresh young talent from Chicago, Illinois. She lists numerous influences from Whitney Houston to Audioslave to Nas to Jamiroquai. Her unique style reflects the wide variety of music she allows to influence her. Her style is raw, intelligent raps over organic, soulful, funky beats that make me think of the 1970’s. Check her single below, “No Regrets” off of her album entitled “Artist Workshop.”
She’s originally from Atlanta and she’s still heavy in the game down there. She’s traveled all over the place, and her music reflects that because you can never really box her into any of the regional categories that many emcees fall into. She is also featured in an upcoming film entitled “Pathways” directed by Eljay Williams that comes out in summer 2010. But don’t mistake the adjectives “young” and “fresh” for “inexperienced.” She’s been independently putting out great music for over ten years now, and whether she ever makes it big nor not has been making moves for a while. If you take the time to listen, you won’t be dissapointed.

His project, “Two! For The Show” shows up in my library as coming out in the year 2064. Not sure if this is Windows Vista being quirky again or an intentional message, but either way it fits what I hear. This young Illinois Producer and Emcee has a production style and flow that really does seem like it’s from a different era. He might snatch one line from a familiar rap song and make it into a part of a catchy chorus for a song that is totally different from the original song sampled, or he might just drop lyrics over a well-known beat while showing off a polished flow and lyrical prowess that you can’t ignore.Download his mixtape, “Two! For the Show,” Here.

Jarrett- What’s your expectations for “New Slang”?
Boognights- I think it will do really well when it drops. A lot of dope up and coming artists are on it and I’m grateful to be featured as well. So it will definitely do well. There are a lot of big supporters on the net.Jarrett- The New Year is fast approaching, what’s your resolution?
Boognights- A resolution? I would say to keep growning as a man and a artist. Get my music out there for more ears to hear.Jarrett- What inspires your creativity? How do you keep the music fresh and never redundant?
Boognights- I really don’t know. I let the beat talk to me and tell me what to do and I just write. It’s funny but it’s true. I just write from the heart. I think that’s where the best music comes from. I’m just true to myself.Jarrett- What got you into rapping?
Boognights- A old friend of mine named Ambush really showed me the essense of rhyming. That’s how I feel in love with it. He was a dope artist. It just stuck with me since.Jarrett- Who are some of the people who inspired you and made you what you are today?
Boognights- There are so many people. As far as in my life it would be my mom, father, sister, brother, and Ambush. Nas, Biggie, Pac, Jay-Z, the whole Wu-Tang. Just to name a few.Jarrett- How did you get the name “Boognights”?
Boognights- It’s funny how I came up with that name. You remember the movie “Boogie Nights”? Well when I was younger in one of my verses I mentioned the character Dirk Diggler. Ever since then I kept making references about the movie. Then I would say boogie all the time. I started calling my self boogie nights and then I finally shortened it and kept it as BOOGNIGHTS. It throws people off now. I think they don’t know what to expect from my music lol. But that’s cool though.Jarrett- What excludes you from other rappers and makes you unique?
Boognights- Well first I would say my name lol. I wouldn’t really say that I’m different. I just think that I actually found myself as a person and a artist and I’m comfortable with me. That allows me to be myself in my art. A lot of people can’t say that now a days.Jarrett- If you could work with any rapper who would it be and why?
Boognights- I would love to work with Nas. Of course there are many, many other artists on there but he’s the first that popped in my head. He’s my favorite emcee and growing up I always loved his flow and tried to mimic him lol. I just love his music and I think he would be great to work with.Jarrett- Whats your favorite track from your upcoming mixtape “New Slang”?
Boognights- I actually haven’t heard the other songs yet from the mixtape.Jarrett- Any shout outs?
Boognights- My whole family and friends. Jumpman crew. A.M.E. And anybody who believes in me and my music.Jarrett- Anything else you wanna say?
Boognights- Make sure you go and download my free mixtape called The ARTiste. Go to myspace.com/BOOGNIGHTS andTwitter.com/BOOGNIGHTS. Look out for more to come. Much luv and peace. We would like to say thanks again to Boognights on taking his time out and doing this interview. Much love man and keep doing what your doing cant wait for the mixtape

December 29th, 2009Just My ThoughtsI know it has been a minute since I have written something thought provoking on the blog. I have been sitting back watching, resting, better myself so that when I tell you all what I think it will all make since I will not seem like I am telling you something just to be flapping my gums. I don’t just blog for slaps and giggles. Some times I really think it is necessary to say what others fear to mention.
As of late I think that a lot of our talent in Detroit is starting to be discovered. Not just locally, but around the U.S. which can be a blessing to some and a demon to others once the “Lime Light” shines upon you. Some like P.L., Big Sean, Ro Spit along with others take it in stride and use it as power to spread not only joy to you by the form of music, but also bring outsiders to a stand still when they hear the Story of Detroit spoke by verses. When I hear those artist speak the truth about Detroit I think to myself, “This is what we need. We need people to hear what is real in Detroit and maybe the stereotypes will end!” Or will they?
For others the “Lime Light” can show your true color and what is underneath your exterior like a black light. For some of you have forgot who you are and haven’t even left the nest yet. It seems that for some they start believing those same songs that they write and start to live beyond their means financially and of the physical and mental aspect of the quote. It is bad to see that some of us think we are so loved, but our egos are what makes those same people smile in your face talk behind your backs when you walk away. That bitter taste in your mouth is not from your last drink, but from the “Lime Light” eating away at all that you strive to be.
A lot of us are starting to shoot our selves in the foot for status, what ever happened to wealth, not riches. To be wealthy is to not have to starve for anything ever again. you can never take a persons wealth away, but you can take a persons riches away one by one. I am waiting for others to stand up with confidence and help with the Detroit Revolution, but some of you…. You rather hide behind this false perception of your self hoping to be placed in the “Cool Category” for the first time in your life only to end up the rightful heir to your “Drunk Uncle’s Thrown” speaking on who you use to be to all your nieces and nephews. And they will only listen to your story because they have to.
The moral of this blog is I want more of us to really think about why you are doing what you are doing and if you are in it for the fame and fortune?… Or are you in it to make a MARK? Fame and fortune comes with the territory if you are one of the best. Don’t live out someone else dreams just because it seems cool. Actually go out and do what you want to do. It may sound corny, but at the end of the day you will be happy and you will not have to “fake it til you make it.” You can be you 24/7. You should never be worrying about being in the “Lime Light”, you should worry about you because the day you fall off is the day the “Lime Light” shines off of you and on to the next one….. If this made anyone catch feelings than it is you that I am speaking on. Learn from it. Peace and have a Happy New Years!

December 29th, 2009BombedAs i looked through the web, i came across this photo! Now we all know 2009 has been the official year of bullsh*t on every front but this has to top most. It appears to be someone who is a huge fan of Yo Gotti’s hit song “5 Star chick.” Yea the song! Now i don’t know how old this young lady is and im hoping she younger 18! Either way this is extremely tacky, tasteless and it says a lot about her mental stability. When she gets older, she is not going to want this across her chest! At least i hope not! People we have got to do better!

Real talk, this song is better than everything on the radio right now. Sorry Lil Wayne Fans! This is a true hip hop artist at his best… I listen to radio for talk, and that’s it. Who told all the radio producers in the world that their stations should only play 10 different songs per month? Bull Shit! Please, if you’re a artist and you have music that is as good as this, send it to me. jerry@campuslifeiscrazy.
Oh yea, this song is like 15 years old.
